Aciclovir belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle tissues in the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more easily. This helps prevent the virus from replicating and causing symptoms. This medication is only available with a doctor`s prescription. Aciclovir 5mg tablets typically start to relieve the symptoms of cold sores and shingles, while Aciclovir 400mg tablets are known to be effective at treating genital herpes outbreaks in people with HIV.
